Cooperation between Denmark and Ethiopia

Below, please find a short description of the relationship between Denmark and Ethiopia, and find more information in the menu to the left about cooperation in the areas of sustainable agriculture, peace and security, and social development.

Denmark regards Ethiopia as a strategic partner in the region as well as globally in a range of areas of mutual interest. The bilateral relationship goes back many years and is being strengthened continuously.

The partnership between Denmark and Ethiopia is strong and has over the years been strengthened within areas of mutual interest. A central element in the partnership is the dialogue, including through the Development Agency Group (DAG) and the EU’s Article 8 Dialogue, with Ethiopia on the developmental and societal trajectory taken. Ethiopia plays a leading role within the African Union, promoting key issues on the African agenda. Denmark sees a potential for an even stronger partnership on areas of mutual interest, including migration and the security political agenda.

Danish development cooperation with Ethiopia started in 2004 and has gathered speed over the years, and now covers areas such as peace and security, the fight against poverty, climate change, sustainable agriculture, and women’s rights. Denmark cooperates with a wide range of partners in Ethiopia to support Ethiopia’s ambition of achieving middle-income status by 2025 through green growth and poverty reduction. Furthermore, the growing interest in the Ethiopian market from Danish companies has illustrated the potential for improved trade relations between the countries.
