Visa

Visa for visiting Denmark or Iceland
In order to travel to Denmark or Iceland, Ethiopian citizens need a Schengen visa which gives permission to travel in and around any of the Schengen countries for a shorter period of time.

A Schengen visa can be granted for a maximum of 90 days within a 6 month period.

When do I apply?
The Embassy recommends that you apply as early as possible but not more than 3 months before the planned departure time. Upon reception of a complete application, the process according to the Schengen Visa Codex rules must not exceed 15 calendar days. However, many applications require prior consultation from other Schengen partners or may have to be referred to the Danish Immigration Service in Copenhagen. This may take several weeks and in some cases up to 12 weeks.  If not all the Schengen-requirements have been met; processing time on individual applications can differ from the abovementioned. Bona Fide visas can be made on a shorter notice. For more exact information on processing time please refer to the Danish Immigration Services web site: www.newtodenmark.dk: Visa processing time.

Where do I apply?
The applicant applies to the country, which is the main destination of the trip. If a number of Schengen countries are to be visited, application should be submitted to the country where the applicant will spend most time.

Visa applications, residence permits, and work permits for Denmark can only be submitted at the Visa Application Centre: http://www.vfsglobal.com/Denmark/Ethiopia/

Validity of the Schengen-Visa
Schengen-visa can only be issued for a total of 90 days; should you need to stay in Denmark for a longer period, you must apply for a residence permit. A Schengen visa does not allow the applicant to take up employment, establish a business, trade or profession. However, during visits of less than 3 months you may carry out certain work-related activities without holding a work permit. More information is available on the website of the Danish Immigration Service, www.newtodenmark.dk.
The issue of Schengen visas is discretionary and depends on the examination of each individual case, including purpose of visit and intention to return.
Please note that you must travel within 3 months from the date of issue of the visa.

Insurance
A medical insurance is compulsory for visitors to Denmark and other Schengen states. The insurance must cover at least 30 000 Euro and include costs for medical treatment, hospitalization and repatriation due to injury or medical reasons. The insurance must be valid in all Schengen states and cover the total length of the visit.

The reimbursement from the insurance company must be payable in any EU-country, Switzerland and Lichtenstein. The insurance certificate must be shown when the application is submitted. Please note that you have to bring your travel insurance with you when travelling due to inspections of relevant documents at the border control when entering the Schengen area.

The Embassy accepts Schengen Travel and medical Insurance from the following local companies: NIB Insurance Company, Awash insurance company, Ethiopian Insurance Corporation, Nile Insurance Company, Africa Insurance, Global Insurance, Lion Insurance, Nyala Insurance, Oromia insurance, United Insurance.

Visa fee

The fee is 60 Euro to be paid in equivalence to ETB.

Misuse of visa
If you remain in Denmark after your visa expires or if you try to use your visa stay to obtain a long-term or permanent residence permit you can be given a penalty period for a period of three to five years. During this period you will be unable to obtain a Schengen visa to enter Denmark.
For more information, please refer to: Misuse of a visa.

Before applying the Embassy recommends all applicants to carefully read the Application Form Guide.
