Denmark launches its first Country Programme in support of sustainable and inclusive development for the people of Ethiopia

Denmark commits 150 million USD in support of the Ethiopian Government’s ambitious reform agenda, its vision of building a climate resilient green economy and reaching lower middle- income status by 2025. The launch of the Country Programme enhances the strong and strategic partnership between Denmark and Ethiopia and the shared commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

On 22 November 2018 the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Government of Denmark signed an agreement totaling 995 million Danish Kroner (equivalent to 4.26 Billion Birr/150 Million USD) for the implementation of the Danish Country Programme for Ethiopia 2018-2022. The Country Programme is closely aligned to Ethiopian national strategies, including the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP II), the Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy (CRGE) and the rollout of the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF).

The Country Programme will contribute to improved governance and respect for human rights, and inclusive, sustainable growth in Ethiopia. Key targets will be to address vulnerability and improve livelihood opportunities for the people of Ethiopia, as well as refugees hosted by Ethiopian communities. Inclusion of women and youth will be a crosscutting focus throughout all programme activities.

To improve livelihood opportunities and increase incomes, Denmark will support the work of the Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA) in including of smallholder farmers in the commercial markets and market-driven value chains. Additionally, Denmark will contribute to enhancing livelihood opportunities and sustainable forest management and conservation in the Kaffa Biosphere. Denmark will furthermore seek to support the reduction of chronic food insecurity and vulnerability of rural populations through the Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP). Additionally in support of the rollout of the CRRF, Denmark will support improved livelihood opportunities for refugees and their host communities through a commitment to the WFP.

Acknowledging the positive political developments in Ethiopia and the progressive reform agenda, Denmark will support the promotion of good governance, transparency, accountability, gender equality and human rights.
